The Russell – by Ian Dunlop, guest at The Russell since 1981
Tower'd quaintly,
Quite unlike any other
Place to rest one's head;
A winding wee-willie-winkie stair,
Creaking footfalls here and there
And colour'd casements to admit
The sea change, drifting across
Lower George from Sydney Cove;
Bathrooms shining like new pins,
Fresh faced girls, fresh faced sheets,
Soft towels, scent'd soap
And nosegays: heliotrope,
Bright daisies, sweet alice,
Geraldton wax,
Acacia
And the like;
Withal, breakfast on a tray
Bearing squeezed oranges
And an array of
Croissants, hot and infused coffee
Colour'd like mahogany toffee;
Then, showers
With warm white robes
And all the care
Of a small hotel.
