The Fortune of War is Sydney’s oldest licensed establishment, and dates from 1828. The first licensee was Samuel Terry who was transported to Australia in 1801 for seven years for theft. At the expiration of his sentence, he made the most of his misfortune to establish his business.
The Fortune of War has retained its old world charm, but has also built an enviable reputation with tourists as well as locals, for providing a warm, traditional service in a cozy heritage bar in The Rocks. Not surprisingly, it’s also a favourite for guests staying at the The Russell Hotel, and is the venue for our highly-regarded Bed and Breakfast offering.
